Customat designs and ships over 1,100 styles of personalised coir doormats — family-name mats, pet mats, seasonal door décor — from a Manchester workshop. The catalogue runs the full weight range from 600g greeting-card mats to 3.5kg "double mat" entrance pieces. They ship UK domestic, EU, and US, with the US lane being the most painful logistics problem until the TradeWind switch in early 2025.
The problem
Heavy, awkward-dimension doormats hate premium international couriers. A 2.5kg coir mat to a Brooklyn buyer was costing £42 all-in via the previous DDP courier (which we won't name, but rhymes with "DLH"), and US holiday spikes meant the per-parcel cost compounded brutally. By Q4 2024 the US shipping line was eating ~14% of the gross margin — a kind of slow-motion bleed that didn't feel solvable.
What changed
TradeWind co-founder Oliver was already running a small Etsy doormat business at the time; he hit the same wall and started looking at UPS Worldwide Economy DDP. UPS WWE handles up to 30kg, has the same Louisville KY transatlantic hub as their premium services, and is roughly a third of the price for the heavier-than-2kg parcels Customat actually ships. The blocker was that no UK reseller was offering UPS WWE DDP cleanly to small UK Shopify/Etsy sellers — so we built one.
The result
Customat now ships its US orders through TradeWind's UPS WWE DDP rails. A 2.5kg doormat to Brooklyn now lands at £16 all-in including pre-paid US import duty — a 62% drop from the prior £42. Transit is the same 4–7 working days. The fulfilment cycle is ~3× faster end-to-end because the customs paperwork builds automatically from the Shopify order data; the team went from an hour a day on shipping admin to roughly ten minutes.
The catch (because there always is one)
UPS WWE has a smaller dimension envelope than premium UPS services. The largest "double mat" SKUs (90cm × 60cm) are right at the edge of acceptable. About 1% of those need a re-route to UPS Standard (~£28 instead of £16). Worth knowing if your products are large in any single dimension.

About the dogfooding
