Rusted Banana hand-cuts steel garden sculptures — 3D dinosaurs, Celtic wall art, woodland creatures, planters — from a Peak District workshop. The products are heavy (2–8kg typical), awkward-shaped (often 60cm × 40cm flat-pack), and very photogenic, which is why the US Etsy audience loves them. The challenge has always been shipping heavy metal art across the Atlantic without the carrier cost eating the entire margin.
The problem
Pre-TradeWind, shipping a 4kg steel sculpture to a US Etsy buyer was costing around £58 all-in via the prior premium-DDP courier — for a £95 product, that's 61% of the gross. The seller either passed the cost to the buyer (hurting conversion at the high shipping-line item) or absorbed it in the listing price (hurting margin). Neither felt sustainable.
What changed
Switching to UPS Worldwide Economy DDP via TradeWind in mid-2025 dropped the same 4kg sculpture to a US buyer from £58 to ~£32 all-in. The 45% shipping cost reduction created room to advertise "free US shipping" as a listing badge — built into the item price — which Etsy's ranking algorithm rewards on the Best Match search.
The result
US sales lifted ~22% in the six months following the switch, attributed by the founder primarily to the "free shipping" listings competing more directly with US-domestic sellers on the Etsy SERP. Lifetime Etsy sales crossed 35,000 in late 2025; US is now consistently the #1 destination market for the shop. The 45% per-parcel saving compounded across the volume covers TradeWind's entire annual platform cost many times over.
The catch (because there always is one)
Some of the larger sculptures (>50cm in any single dimension) need additional packaging to meet UPS WWE's dimension envelope, which adds 5–10 minutes of pack time. Rusted Banana built a custom flat-pack shipping carton for the biggest pieces, which solved the dimension problem and as a side-effect cut breakage rate. Worth mentioning that "switch carriers and re-engineer your packaging at the same time" is genuinely a real project.
